Music for the Soul |
If this is not one of my favorite subjects I don‘t have one. Music is many things to many people. There is no one specific category or style that stands above another. It is the creation of sound that spiritually, mentally and physically motivates and uplifts a listener. Music started with the universe. There is sound and vibration that travels through space from all of the universal activity. To those listening, it is music to their ears. This universal presence of sound transfers to individuals who have the ability to gather it and transform it into intelligible arrangements that we call music. It started with the first sounds emitted and moved to the first man or woman who carved a hollow log and began to use it for sound. This led to the development of instruments that have become staple in musical creation and performance. Music is said to be responsible for inspirations in our greatest human creations and is written to be key in some of our greatest moral degradation’s. Music is more than individual instruments, even though the many instruments made contribute to the music collective. It is the thing that people love, hate and it transfers through all cultures. Music has traveled the distance of time and humanity and continues to be a major force in life today. If you asked all of the people on the planet what is their favorite music, each would have an answer. It is one of those things where you don’t have be one who is involved in the creation of it to love it or enjoy it. You don’t have to be a musical scholar to scoff and dislike some the presentations music represents. There is magic in music and that magic continues to be discovered. |

Music in our Lives |

Have you ever tried to watch a silent film? Or even work around your house in silence? On rare occasions maybe you’ve even spent time just—thinking while driving in your car. But I’m guessing these are all pretty rare moments for most Americans. The truth is music underscores our very lives. Many of us even turn on some tunes in order to get to sleep at night. Remember when everyone had a great big radio or boom box? Soon after there was the personal cassette player and then it appeared—the CD! Now in the day of everything computer, we’re able to listen to our favorite tunes via mp3 files and downloads on our IPods and IPhones and everything else “I.” Ask us why we’re so obsessed with music and I doubt if very many of us can tell you why, but the truth is we love our music. One great reasons to love music is because music is soothing. Listening to music does wonders to alleviate stress. Please note that everyone has different tastes in music. Listen to the music that you feel comfortable. Sitting down and forcing yourself to listen to relaxation music that you don't like may create stress, not alleviate it. Music has always been a great healer. In the Bible, we learn about how David played the harp to help ease his severe depression of King Saul. Music is a significant mood-changer and reliever of stress, working on many levels at once. |

Music is not only a way to entertain yourself, but can also be a source of relaxation and/or therapy. Below you will find some tips on how to truly enjoy your music. - To wash away stress, try taking a 20-minute "sound bath." Put some relaxing music on your stereo, and then lie in a comfortable position on a couch or on the floor near the speakers. For a deeper experience, you can wear headphones to focus your attention and to avoid distraction.
• Choose music with a slow rhythm - slower than the natural heart beat which is about 72 beats per minute. Music that has repeating or cyclical pattern is found to be effective in most people. • As the music plays, allow it to wash over you, rinsing off the stress from the day. Focus on your breathing, letting it deepen, slow and become regular. Concentrate on the silence between the notes in the music; this keeps you from analyzing the music and makes relaxation more complete. • If you need stimulation after a day of work, go for a faster music rather than slow calming music. • When going gets tough, go for a music you are familiar with - such as a childhood favorite or favorite oldies. Familiarity often breeds calmness. • Take walks with your favorite music playing on the walkman. Inhale and exhale in tune with the music. Let the music take you. This is a great stress reliever by combining exercise (brisk walk), imagery and music. • Listening to the sounds of nature, such as ocean waves or the calm of a deep forest, can reduce stress. Try taking a 15- to 20-minute walk if you're near the seashore or a quiet patch of woods. If not, you can buy tapes of these sounds in many music stores. Relax and enjoy the music! |

Hip Hop Music |

Afro American people have always used verbal or the oral tradition to convey history. As Afro Americans used these traditions they started to use more and more entertaining words and making the story more animated. Did you know that this is the first time that hip-hop came to be? Back in the days of slavery when slaves were on the plantation singing spiritual songs they were using a form of rap How, you may ask? These slaves had no instruments: they used beats from any object that they got their hands on. Whatever was on the slaves' minds they sung about. Sometimes they would sing about being free like the bird. They would also sing about going back home. While they were on the porch or in the back yard other slaves would join in and add their two cents. Much like the hip hop-rap music of today. After some raps other person starts to take over. Hip Hop iis also in the black church. How so, you may ask? The call and response of the preacher. The preacher calls out and says 'church can I get an Amen,' and the church response with the amen. Like today when a rap artist yells out 'give me a ho ho,' and the audiences shouts back with a 'ho ho.' Hip hop music is not only in the black community, it has crossed all cultures and races. |
